Workshop Update 16th November

Wednesday, 16th November, 2016

Standard 4 mt Loco 80097

The boiler is still at Dalgleish Engineering where they are having ongoing problems with the longtitudinal stays.  Nigel has made a replacement logtitudinal stay and delivered it to Dalgleish.

Nigel has also started machining the injector bodies.

Stuart has completed the ashpan spray pipe.

Ivatt loco 46428

With the continuing delay in the boiler’s return our efforts have been put into the Ivatt.

Stuart and Phil have been removing the pins and cutting off the spring hangers before warming and freeing off the seized brake rigging. They, Dave and Harry then removed the studs on the cylinder end covers and piston.

Allan has cut out the last of the rivets on the front running boards before burning off the rivet heads holding the pony truck pivot point stretcher. He then removed the pony truck centre casting assembly. The pony truck stretcher was then stripped of all attachments. Dave and Harry struggled to remove the split pins and then all the bolts on the pony truck, which was then split from the main casting.

The brake cylinder bolts have been burnt off and the cylinder removed. Using warming gear the bell crank and then the bearing housing was removed from the hangers.

Allan, Dave and Harry removed the last of the cylinder drain cock rigging, whilst  Daniel removed the bearing bracket. The way shaft was then removed after a serious effort.

Allan has pressure washed the pony truck, cylinder end covers, axle boxes and other inside areas of the fifty years of grime. This also brought out a lot of rust.

Allan and Harry then tackled removing the remaining brake rigging which needed serious warming and hammering before having to be finally gas axed out.

Allan, Dave and Harry have removed the front draw bar and Stuart and Allan then continued to drill / burn the buffer beam rivets out. The front draw bar rubbing block was removed.

Jimmy and Allan burned and removed the rear floor support on the rear drag box.

Geoff and Richard have started machining the studs for the cylinders.

Alan has been improving the storage units upstairs.

A reminder that our shop sales coach is open every weekend where our team, Dennis, Irene and John (with new member Matthew) continue to raise funds for the group. There are all sorts of goodies from railway mags; books; dvd’s and a range of new and used model railway items. We have a range of BS4G souveniers including sweatshirts; polo shirts and baseball caps.

We always welcome donations of railway goods for sale in the shop – especially model railway items. They’re at the ELR Bolton Street station in Bury and you’ll find them at the bottom end of the car park on platform two. Come down and have a browse.
