About Bury Standard 4 Group

The Bury Standard 4 group was founded in 1984 by a small group of enthusiasts, the group has now grown to well over 150 Share Holders and Members.

The Bury Standard 4 Group’s original aim was to purchase a BR Standard Class 4 Tank Engine from Woodham’s of Barry Island. The group went down to Woodham’s scrap yard to inspect the three remaining BR Standard 4 Tank engines and it was decided that 80097 was the engine to purchase. The intention was to restore it for use on the East Lancashire Railway.

Since then, the group has expanded and now owns a second ex. Barry locomotive, Ivatt Class 2 Mogul No. 46428, which is awaiting restoration once 80097 has been completed. The group also owns a fleet of freight wagons, a sales coach, a loco shed and engineering workshop.

Our base is in our Engineering Workshop, which is located at the East Lancashire Railway's Bury Bolton Street Station and we can be found at the end of Platform 2. Visitors should make contact via our sales coach on Platform 2, at the end of the car park fence (which used to be the original Platform 1). Look for our banner.

We would like to hear from anyone who would like to see 80097 back in steam and join us, either as a volunteer with our steam group working on 80097 or maybe helping out in our sales coach.

You don’t need any previous experience, as there are jobs for people with any range of skills.  Of course - all brews are free !!

If you are able to help us financially by maybe purchasing shares, becoming a member of the group or giving us a one off donation - then every penny goes straight into the 80097 restoration fund.

Shares can be purchased in The Bury Steam locomotive Company limited, the body that owns the assets.
