Latest activities on Ivatt Mogul 46428:

As you may recall we are working towards commencing work on the boiler firebox. The first task is removal of the foundation ring. For those who may not know the

foundation ring is a large steel member which runs around the base of the firebox. The inner and outer wrappers, inner and outer walls if you like, are rivetted to this ring. It

holds them together at a fixed distance a bit like a house wall cavity. The ring has to come out for inspection as cracking is quite common. The outer wrapper is steel and the

inner copper and is in very good condition. The outer wrapper all around the base is wasted and requires replacement. For this work to be done the boiler needs to be

inverted.

Our plan is to carry the boiler on a chassis and carry out the work inside our workshop over the next few years. The ELR have kindly donated a carriage bogie, the type

made of steel sections. They are designed to carry half of a 30 ton Mk1 carriage, our boiler is estimated at about 7 tons. We are fabricating a mechanism to actuate the

bogie brakes and also making support members to sit the boiler firebox and barrel on. When the work on the bogie is complete we will need the boiler lifting on to it. It can

then be rolled into the workshop and a scaffold erected. Then the serious, laborious task of rivet busting will begin. See pictures of the Mk 1 Bogie sat outside the workshop.

Our grateful thanks to ELR staff who kindly transferred to bogie to our siding. It is really appreciated. We owe you one! Watch this space.
