Boiler Progress

Saturday, 4th July, 2015

This is the latest report from our boiler repair company, Adam Dalgleish on Tyneside, where good progress is being made.

Repairs to the holes of the inner copper wrapper have been made. The holes were out of shape and required a coppersmith to weld them back to size. Then the holes were reamed out to put them back into line with the foundation ring. This then enabled the foundation ring to be riveted to the inner and outer wrapper, sizes ranged from 13/16” to 1 ¼”. The stays were then fitted by being trimmed to size and riveted to form around the wrapper.

The remaining patch screws have been fitted to the inner backhead and then caulked over.

Steady progress has been made on the barrel. The two separate barrel sections have been riveted together. This required the rivet holes to be reamed out to 24mm and cut down to size.

The same procedure was followed in fitting the dome to the barrel.

The tubeplate needed to be straightened before it was then warmed and headed up to the barrel. It has been temporarily bolted in place awaiting riveting.

The photos are of the boiler and firebox in Adam Dalgleish's workshop.
